A rodent-eating snake and a hamster have developed an unusual bond at a zoo in Tokyo, Japan. Their relationship began when zookeepers presented the hamster to the snake as a meal.
However, the rat snake (named Aochan) refused to eat the rodent. The two now share a cage, and the hamster sometimes falls asleep sitting on top of his natural foe. Zookeepers have since named the hamster ‘Gohan’ – the Japanese word for meal.
How amazing!!!!!

“I like your glasses,” says Erik Lehnsherr, looking over at Charles from the corner of his eye while he rummages through his locker. It’s the most Charles has ever heard out of his mouth in three years, despite having had the next locker over from him that entire time. He’s not quite sure what brought it out of him, but considering how few people actually talk to him to begin with, he isn’t going to question it.
“Thank you,” Charles says graciously, because while usually comments on his glasses are followed by more mocking and sometimes typical high-school-style violence, Lehnsherr has never seemed the type to bully someone smaller than him. “My sister teases me for them constantly, she says they’re terribly unfashionable.”
Lehnsherr smirks and pulls out an obsolete-looking camera, complete with a long shoulder strap. “That’s why I like them,” he says dryly. “That, and they quite bring out your eyes.”
“I’ve heard it just looks a bit professorish,” Charles quips, a repeat of a favourite insult of his stepbrother’s, focusing on trading out the AP Psych text in his arms for two on the history of genetics and the appropriate notebook rather than on the slight flutter in his ribcage and the heat creeping up his neck.
“Actually,” Lehnsherr continues, “I was wondering if you’d let me take a few pictures of you sometime.” He holds up his camera and raises one brow just slightly, as if to say, see, I’m a legitimate photographer, I’ve got the stuff for it and everything.
Charles looks up at him in surprise, his own eyebrows raised high enough that they vanish into his bangs. “I — wait, what? Really?” Lehnsherr nods, looking amused, and after a flustered moment of wondering why anyone would want to commit his oversized eyes and weirdly-shaped nose to film, Charles finally says, “Oh, well, alright, I — I’m not doing anything this weekend?”
“Perfection,” Lehnsherr says, with a suddenly genuine smile, one Charles has never seen on him over three years of sharing hallway space with him, and it’s at once terrifying and starkly wonderful.
They exchange phone numbers and Lehnsherr promises to text him with the name of a coffeehouse they can meet up at before the shoot; with that, he walks off, the strap of his camera dangling from the crook of his arm, and Charles watches him go, a lot more enthusiastic about the weekend than he recalls ever being before. It’s my birthday today. Photoshoot fic.
The thing is, for all of his love of photography Erik has nearly always preferred to take pictures of things and not of people. Easier that way: you can arrange things, you can prop them up and put them in all kinds of scenes and situations and you never never have to hear them complain, you never have to tell them to get in the moment, because they simply are.
So he spends his Friday night cleaning up his darkroom and the tiny bolthole of a studio he’s grafted on to his flat, really nothing more than the sunniest corner of the whole thing, the one next to the wall-to ceiling window that was the main reason he’d even taken the flat in the first place.
At five minutes to the meeting time he dashes out, cursing, because of course he’d asked Charles to come over in the morning and then he’d forgotten to set out refreshments. Coffee, sweet rolls, and the woman at the bakery winks and tips in three chocolate eclairs extra, refuses him when he tries to pay for the pastries, and Erik is still chuckling when he saunters back up to the third floor and Charles is leaning against the wall next to his door.
Charles is sleeping, his shoulders moving slightly with each breath, and Erik swears fervently, silently, because he’d love to take a picture, low light or not.
Instead he composes himself and jingles his keys loudly and Charles snaps awake.
The pretty picture is spoiled, but Erik doesn’t mind, because the smile Charles turns on him is almost as beautiful as the expression on his sleeping face.
Erik motions him inside, and he almost - almost - doesn’t mind when Charles makes a beeline for his bookshelves.
Erik drinks his coffee and, silently, picks up the camera and stalks Charles’s wanderings, smaller and smaller circles inside the apartment.
